(18, WA, USA) Maira - Emotional Contagion

Emotional contagion refers to the transfer of emotions from one communicator to another, where those around us influence the emotions we experience. This process can occur synchronously or asynchronously and involves the spread of both positive and negative emotions, with even small interactions having a significant impact on our mood.

High school basketball games are known for their loud and hyperactive atmosphere, where the energy surrounding them is intense. Throughout the season, our team performed exceptionally well, and the emotions of the players, coaches, and fans were palpable. As the team scored points, executed exciting plays, and displayed enthusiasm, the crowd's emotions mirrored their excitement and passion through chants and praise. This positive energy, coupled with the intense atmosphere, created an emotional contagion, causing spectators to share in the exhilaration and support for the team. Similarly, negative emotions were also transferred to the crowd. When plays did not go our way, the frustrations from the players spread to the audience, eliciting groans and displeasure.

My experiences at high school basketball games vividly illustrate how emotions can spread through emotional contagion. The intensity of the game elicited both positive and negative reactions among spectators, with moments of scoring points and making good plays leading to waves of happiness and high energy, while setbacks like turnovers or the opposing team scoring resulted in disappointment and low energy. The emotions expressed by the players and coaches during the game were effectively transmitted to onlookers, showcasing the contagious nature of emotions. It's important to note that emotional contagion can occur in various situations, not just in sports events, highlighting the interconnectedness of human emotions and the significant impact others can have on our emotional experiences.
